Top Tools and Techniques for a Top Cosmetology School, Corvallis, Oregon

By Press Releases

Every hairdresser and stylist has their own arsenal of tips and tricks they use to do their craft. With all of the color and product lines constantly changing and growing, its hard to know which ones you should use.

We teach our students at Johnny Matthew’s Cosmetology School how to identify underlying pigments and tones of the hair to better provide the color that the client wants, rather than applying a color and hoping for the best. Here at Johnny Matthew’s school, we are a Goldwell exclusive salon, meaning we only use large selection of color that the manufacturer provides. We chose to use this product because it is environmentally conscious; ingredients are low ammonia-nontoxic with no harsh chemicals, all-safe for humanity and the earth. Along with the color theory, we train students to measure the proper amount of color, as to not waste color, and so they are not constantly leaving their client to mix more color together.

Seeing as how the summer heat and sun has hit the Pacific Northwest this past month, everybody is going blonde, whether it be natural or with the help of lightener. Everybody always says that lightener is bad for hair, but with the help of Olaplex, this isn’t so true anymore. Johnny Matthew’s Hair School is proud to offer clients the option of having Olaplex added to their hair color and their lightener, if they so choose. Olaplex is a bond-builder, meaning that your hair won’t be so damaged after the service. We use Olaplex daily in our student salon, and they are all taught how to use it both as a bond builder, and also as a deep conditioner.

If your school tools aren’t the best, how do you expect to give the best haircut or color for your client? Johnny Matthew’s Hairdressing Training School is excited to say that we use Ferrari and Babyliss tools in the student tool kits that all students receive when they enroll at the school. We provide blow-dryers and hair clippers with Ferrari engines in them, meaning they get the job done quickly and efficiently, and the tool will last you a long time. For our students shear needs, we provide Hattori Hanzo shears, with a representative that visits the school once a month to ensure everyone’s shears are sharp and safe enough to be using.

Now is the time to enroll for $250 per month your dreams can become reality!

Why YOU Should Become a Hairdresser in the Willamette Valley

By Press Releases

By 2022, the field of Cosmetology is expected to grow by nearly 15%*. With well over 100 salons spanning from McMinnville to Stayton, and from Keizer to Albany, there are ample opportunities for you to become the master hairstylist you have always wanted to be.

Here at Johnny Matthew’s Hairdressing Training School in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon, we are providing the unique opportunity for anyone to achieve their dream in as little as a year. Whether you are interested in becoming a hairstylist or a barber, we can easily cater to your needs. We offer a wide variety of classes, ranging from a simple one-length haircut, to a detailed fade with design work, and everything in-between.

We train students with an open mind- we’re not stuck in the 1960’s, demanding that students wrap hundreds of perms, and have to do a certain number of haircuts. We allow students to explore where their talents lie, and help them advance in that area. We offer in-depth color classes for our hair design students, which include the newest trends such as ombre’s, sombre’s, color melts, and specialty fashion colors. By encouraging students to dabble in all  areas of cosmetology, we are helping them become the best hairdresser they can be. Once a month, we have a guest barber in the school, to demonstrate that there are different ways to achieve a fade, a taper, or designs in the hair. We encourage students to ask questions and experiment with different techniques, and share their findings with one another.

After completing your training at Johnny Matthew’s, we send you out into the workforce with a high understanding of cuts, color, and customer service that will set you above and beyond the other cosmetology graduates searching for a station to hold. With your training in the Goldwell haircolor line, your solid understanding of the geometric approach to haircutting, and your attention to detail to win clients over, you will have your pick of salons to work at.

Ten Reasons to Become A Hairdresser in Salem, Oregon

By Beauty School, Press Releases

With beauty shops popping up on every corner of this Capitol city, how can you make a name for yourself and achieve all of your career goals? Follow the Ten Reasons to Become Hairdresser in Salem, Oregon.

  1. Self-Employment: Let’s face it, a career in hair design is a lucrative one; a well-seasoned hairdresser can earn more than $100,000 a year. Johnny Matthew’s can confidently say that in 2015, we have a 100% employment rate for our Hair Design program. We teach students how to run a book, set prices for their jobs, and how to use social media to grow their clientele. By being able to create your own work hours and prices, you can work as much or as little as you want. As an independent contractor you have no boss to answer to, so if you need or want to take a day off to spend with your family or as you like, you can.
  2. Changing Lives: In this industry, people come to us looking for a chance to feel good about themselves. Students are taught how to do everything from a simple trim to a Worthington’s Graduated Bob. You develop all the skills to achieve any look a client could ask for. Here at Johnny Matthew’s, we teach students how to confidently and competently change hair and lives.
  3. Right Tools, Right Place: Johnny Matthew’s Hairdressing Training School only uses top-of-the-line products to train the next wave of hairdressers entering the workforce. Our students are able to launch a career on the right foot, with the best tools the industry offers. We provide Hattori Hanzo shears, Ferrari tools, and our own line of Smart Hair Care, specially created by our owner.
  4. Increase Your Revenue: You can make a healthy income by just offering services, but once you learn how to recommend products to your clients, your income can increase exponentially. Johnny Matthew’s put an emphasis on being able to tastefully suggest products to clients, to ensure that their hair not only stays healthy, but so that they can recreate their new hairstyle at home.
  5. Client Consultation: Being able to converse with the person in your chair is a quality that Johnny Matthew’s strives to integrate into our curriculum. Asking questions to find out how the client does their hair each day, how much time they are willing to spend in the morning, and what type of product they generally use, make the typical consultation more personal and productive than just asking what haircut the client wants.
  6. Technically Sound: Just as with anything else, the first time a new concept is explained, you may not understand it. Johnny Matthew’s has three diversely trained instructors on the floor to assist students at all times. If one one instructor’s explanation of a particular cut doesn’t make quite make sense, there are two other teachers who can explain in different terms to better accommodate for different learning styles.
  7. Capture the Client: Letting a client leave without first scheduling them for a future visit, may not only mean a lost long-term client, but also the additional selling opportunities that come along with that individual over time. By pre-booking clients, you can build up a steady and reliable business. And your clientele will build as your satisfied customers tell their friends about how great you are and recommend you.
  8. Tracking Growth: A primary component of Johnny Matthew’s hairdresser training is our point-of-sale system. This advanced system shows students how much revenue they made in services and product sales, and how many clients they saw in a given time period. This tracking system helps students realize what they would have made in a day, week, month, or year to realistically estimate what type of a living they could have after successfully graduating cosmetology school.
  9. Goal Setting:  In order to be successful, a hairdresser must have goals to aspire to. At Johnny Matthew’s, we encourage students to create goals every month, whether it be achieving a higher percentage of retail, more clients than the month before, or up-selling services to current clients. Throughout their time at Johnny Matthew’s, students are able to see how setting goals and accomplishing them helps to increase their revenue, client base, and performance. With our competitive level system, students are able to charge more per service as they become more accomplished and competent.
  10. A Whole New World: After getting your license in Oregon to be a hairdresser, there are so many opportunities that open up to you. There are untold continuing education classes, seminars, and, of course, ever-changing fashions and styles for you to learn and keep up with. Johnny Matthew’s is at the forefront of new trends, offering classes from leading companies such as Brazilian Blow-out and Goldwell to teach about trends and techniques to keep you at the top of your game.

Salem, Oregons Top Ten Barbering Secrets

By Press Releases

With barbering becoming an ever increasing popular career, how do you set yourself apart from the old ‘hole in the wall’ barber shops?

Here are the top ten barbering secrets that we share with our students enrolled in the Johnny Matthew’s barbering program.

1. Diversity: don’t limit yourself to guards and fades but reach into mastering cutting both ladies and mens hair. Clipper cuts to round and inversion layers.

2. Career Development: with 100 hours of the barbering program dedicated solely to Career Development in Oregon, we lay a strong emphasis on film, graphic resumes and financial tracking for your career development  course. Marketing and branding yourself are one of the keys to success in your chosen career field.

3. Tool choice and maintenance: choosing the right tool for the job is 1/3 of the battle. Knowing how to sanitize and maintain your tools is another 1/3. The final 1/3 is artistically using your chosen tool to its full capability. With so many different clippers, shears, razors and dryers out there, Johnny Matthew’s guides you in your decision making for school and career.

4. Scheduling: at the end of the day you’re in the barbering business to make money. Scheduling your book of business is key. Your time goal by the end of Johnny Matthew’s barber program should be 20 minutes per mens cut and 45 minutes per ladies cut to maximize your time.

5. Licensure preparation: you can’t be a barber unless you hold a current State license and that means you have to pass the State Boards. Our licensure preparation class gives you what you need to pass successfully. We download onto your free iPad mini quizzes and interactive media to aid and assist you for success.

6. Interview ready: introducing you to barber shop owners and operators is important. At Johnny Matthew’s Barber School we have local barbershop owners come and talk to you about the business and current job openings at their shops so in some cases you may have a job lined up before you even graduate!

7. Retailing: retail sales should be 20% of your total revenue sales. If you’re missing this mark you are missing the mark. In an industry where beauty products account for billions of dollars per year in revenues, don’t cut yourself out of the lion’s share of potential income.  Our Career Development class teaches you how to attain retailing excellence.

8. Up selling: if a gentleman comes in for a cut why not suggest a hot towel shave or vice versa? You could even offer it for free the first time and get a shave client for life. Maximize your service potential!

9. Pre-booking: don’t let a guest leave without securing them for their next appointment. Pre booking is the key to business growth and security. One lost pre-book can easily equate to one lost guest and all the potential revenue connected to that person.

10. Proactive or reactive: are you going to be a proactive or reactive barber? We train our barbers to look 3 days ahead into their schedules and try to fill the gaps through social media marketing. We encourage our students to plan how they can suggest and additional service or special product by reviewing their guest customer profiles before they start their work day.

We hope these top ten barbering secrets help you in your careers, we know that they’ve certainly helped us and our team of successful students here at Johnny Matthew’s Barber School Salem, Oregon!

I am a transfer student from another school in the area (touted as the “best” one). I had been at that other school for over a year. I have been at Johnny Matthew’s for a week and I have learned more about advanced color and cutting than a year at my old school. If you are thinking of attending cosmetology school, this is the best one by far. Come here and you will learn how to do hair in today’s world, not just 1950′s perms and wet sets.

I have been a student here since July 2014, and the degree of training I have received has been above and beyond what I ever expected. We are given hands-on experience from day one, and there is always help available when we need it. We are given top-of-the-line tools to give clients the best cut and experience we can, and I think it shows. I really appreciate being taught trends, along with how to do classic cuts. Thanks to the instructors attention and detail to curriculum, I feel completely confident in my abilities to succeed after I have graduated.
